Real-World Learning in Action: Dom’s Harbor Freight Fellowship Experience at South Bay Toyota
Real-world learning is at the heart of Da Vinci Schools, giving students authentic, hands-on experiences that prepare them for college, career, and life. Dom, an 11th grader at Da Vinci Connect High School, recently put this approach into action through his Harbor Freight Fellowship at South Bay Toyota. Over 30 immersive hours, Dom dove into the automotive world, gaining valuable skills and insider experience that will set him up for future success.
Dom assisted with oil changes, tire rotations, and other routine maintenance services while working closely with the Lube Team. This role provided him with a strong foundation in automotive skills, customer service, and professional communication. He also shadowed experienced technicians, observing advanced diagnostic and repair procedures, and was introduced to dealership systems and tools that deepened his understanding of vehicle maintenance and repair.
Throughout his fellowship, Dom was mentored by Fixed Operations Director Ricky Lemou and his team, who offered guidance, support, and insight into the operations of a professional dealership. Through this mentorship, Dom built meaningful connections across multiple departments and gained an inside look at the fast-paced world of dealership life. The experience not only strengthened his interest in the automotive field but also exemplified the kind of career-connected opportunities that define Da Vinci’s approach to real-world learning. This fellowship opportunity was made possible through the professional connections built by Da Vinci’s Real-World Learning team.
Most importantly, the fellowship confirmed Dom’s passion for automotive work. He described the experience as both fun and educational, sharing:
“The internship was so much fun! I got hands-on experience reading diagnostics, working on suspension systems like control arms, and using Toyota’s tools and systems. I was able to network with the team, who said they’d consider hiring me.Overall, I learned how important teamwork and professional connections are.”
Dom’s fellowship is just one example of Da Vinci’s commitment to preparing students for college, career, and life through real-world learning. Across all Da Vinci schools, students engage in college prep coursework, career pathways, dual enrollment courses, industry projects, career-connected learning experiences, and more. These opportunities ensure that every student graduates with authentic experiences, professional networks, and the confidence to thrive in the world beyond high school.
Dom received a $500 scholarship in recognition of his participation in the Harbor Freight Fellows Initiative. We are deeply grateful to Harbor Freight and South Bay Toyota for this exciting opportunity!!
